Are you looking for a fun and practical sewing project that can brighten up your dining table all year round? These double-sided table mats might just be the perfect solution! In this tutorial, I’ll show you how to create table mats with a twist – one side is festive for Christmas, while the other features a gorgeous Liberty spring theme. It’s like having two sets of table mats in one! You’ll have a fresh look ready for spring and already feel a step ahead for Christmas. What’s not to love?
Finished Mat Size:
34cm x 46cm (13" x 18")
Seam Allowance:
¼"
Fabric Quantities (Based on 4 Mats):
Christmas-themed fabric x5 fat quarters (I used Berries and Blooms from The Crafty Lass)
Liberty spring-themed fabric x5 fat quarters
Bosal Place Mats or Lightweight Wadding/Batting
1m of Plain Sage Cotton (co-ordinating with both collections)
½m of Cherry Red Plain Cotton
Bondaweb
Sewing machine
Rotary cutter, rulers, and usual sewing supplies
Christmas Side:
Cut the fabric as follows (width x height):
Red x4: 12¼" x 13½"
Festive side x4 (two in Berry Vines, two in Poinsettia Posy): 6¾" x 13½"
Sew the festive fabric to the red along the 13½" side.
Prepare the florals:
Cut your Bondaweb to roughly the size of the florals you want to fussy cut.
Iron the Bondaweb to the reverse of the fabric (follow the product instructions).
Cut out the florals, mixing smaller and larger clusters.
Remove the backing paper and arrange the florals on the red side.
Iron them into place carefully.
Add free motion stitching:
Switch to a free motion foot, lower the feed dogs, and use matching threads (e.g., red and green).
Have fun stitching over the floral designs.
Set this side aside while working on the reverse.

Liberty Spring Side:
Cut the fabric as follows (width x height):
Plain Sage x36: 2½" x 2¼"
Plain Sage x36: 2½" x 3¼"
Each of the 5 Liberty prints x8: 2½" x 8"
Sew pieces together:
Attach a 2¼" piece of Sage to one end and a 3¼" piece to the other end of each Liberty fabric strip.
Layout the strips, ensuring each mat consists of 9 rows with alternating short and long Sage pieces at the top and bottom.
Assemble the mat:
Sew the rows together, press seams to one side.
Line up the Liberty side with the completed Christmas side press and trim any overhang.
Topstitch close to the edge.
Finishing Touches:
Create bias binding:
Cut 2½" strips of Sage fabric on the bias (align the 45° angle of your ruler with the fabric edge).
Sew the strips together and press using a bias binding tool.
Attach the binding:
Stitch the binding to one side, leaving a tail to join the ends.
Fold the binding over to the other side and top stitch in place.
Your double-sided table mats are complete! They’re ready to host a delicious dinner, and I bet you won’t be able to resist telling your guests the secrets they hold.
